[Kindle Fire] How to Flash TWRP and Install CM7

Ive released two new videos following my rooting video on how to install the Team Win recovery (which is GREAT) and how to use that recovery to flash CyanogenMod 7. Check out the links below for the corresponding video.

[Thunderbolt & Dinc2] Liquid Gingerbread v3.2

Just though I should give a quick shout out to Liquid Gingerbread v3.2 for the thunderbolt and droid incredible 2. I've been using this rom for a while now on my bolt and have been really enjoying it. The included ice cream sandwhich theme is really nice as well. If you like aosp roms, I'd give it a shot.

[Thunderbolt] Themes for BAMF Forever 1.10 by zhp pilot

I've found some great themes that were posted yesturday and today on the teambamf.net forums by a very talented zhp pilot. There are red, cyan, pink, and green varieties of this design. You must register with the forum in order to download the files. If you need help flashing the theme, you can follow along with my Video Here. You must be on the rom BAMF Forever 1.10 for this theme to work.

Kindle Fire Video Collection

I have released three videos, one for sideloading apps to an unrooted kindle fire that aren't available in the amazon app store, one for rooting and unrooting the kindle fire, and one for installing the android market once the kindle is rooted. All of these videos can be followed without the need to install ADB.

[Thunderbolt] Miui ROM

Some brilliant devs have gotten an almost fully working miui rom working for the thunderbolt. It now has working data (3g and 4g) and SMS. Mostly everything else works, but you should check out the original post linked below to see a full list and instructions on how to install.

Kindle Fire

I have pre ordered a Kindle Fire and plan on releasing rooting and modding videos to YouTube.  It should arrive November 17th, and I intend on hacking this thing up as soon as root and (hopefully) a version of stock android is modded for it.  I see great potential in this small, affordable tablet and hope it gets as much developer support as the HP touch pad has. If it does, then I will be posting walkthroughs to my YouTube channel.

How to Downgrade Incredible 2, 2.3.4 Bootloader to Root

At the moment, revolutionary will only root an Incredible 2 running 2.3.3. If you've upgraded to 2.3.4 then you've been out of luck. If you follow this thread (and the original method thread linked in this thread) you should be able to downgrade your boot loader to the 2.3.3 boot loader so you can root using revolutionary. I can't provide much support for this since I do not have an incredible 2 anymore.

Update:

I've now made a How To video showing this procedure. Follow the link below for the video.

GB OTA Build 2.11.605.5 - Rooted & Debloated

Here is the Gingerbread OTA that was released on October 25, 2011. It is build number 2.11.605.5 and has many improvements over the last OTA that was taken down quickly. This ROM is the official stock build but with root and is debloated (all the crap apps are removed). To flash, put the ROM on your sd card, boot to recovery, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, mounts and storage, wipe system partition, then choose zip from sd card and flash.

Sense 3.5 BAMF SoaB

I've recently tried out team bamfs version of sense 3.5 for the thunderbolt, and I am very impressed with both how well it runs (thanks to team bamf) and with sense 3.5 from htc.  Check out the link below for details and download link.

BAMF Forever

The BAMF team has just released a new, true gingerbread sense 3.0 ROM (not sense 2.1 with 3.0 elements). I've tested it out with boot manager and it is pretty slick!

Here are some of the ROM's features (list taken from their post, v1)
  • A new version of Sense 3.0
  • 2.11.605.0 modified base to fix camera issues
  • BAMF toolkit
  • Wake on Volume
  • Reboot options, including screenshot feature from our resident bad ***, ihtfp69
  • Extended quick settings
  • All of the typical bamf UI tweaks you have grown to love, plus one more. I will keep that a surprise
  • Fully working HTC Sense Hub
  • Overglow animations(1.0.1)
  • Redraw fix (1.0.1)
  • Battery percentages from uber with the cool red lightning bolt (1.0.1)
  • Bugs SHOULD be minimal, but please report what you find

Forced OTA Updates on Rooted Thunderbolt

I have been hearing a lot lately that after rooting, peoples' phones are updating automatically over night. Their phone usually will then not boot up and keeps shutting off. This situation is not as bad as it use to be now with the revolutionary root method because the revolutionary bootloader will not be overwritten by an ota, keeping the s-off status. I found the article that is linked below that explains different methods on how to recovery from this situation. To avoid these updates in the future, I would suggest installing a custom rom. If you need any help with that there is a video linked below as well. Also, feel free to post in my new forum.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 - Root Now Works For 2.3 Gingerbread

The Revolutionary team has done it! Their bootloader rewriting tool now supports all gingerbread updates and many new phones, including the Thunderbolt. It is the same method to root the incredible 2 as it was with froyo, so you can still follow my how to video on YouTube. Below is a link to my How to Root - HTC Droid Incredible 2 video. Let me know if the updated tool works for you in the comments of that video!

Official 1.70.605.0 MR2 - Radio 1.39.00.0627r, 0.01.69.0625r

Well finally an official MR2 update has started to roll out. @teamandirc got his hands on it a little early and a rooted version has been created. In my opinion, the best feature from this OTA is the new radio. It will work on any gingerbread rom, like Das BAMF 3.0, so there is no need to flash leaked radios anymore. Check out the link below for the full rooted rom and radio.

Update: Radio Pack is now updated to include this radio.

Chingy claims he's been using it for a week so "theres nothign to be scared about." I recommend flashing this if your running a gingerbread rom like das bamf 2.0.

MR2 Radio 1.39.00.0508w, 0.01.69.0510w_3 Leaked

Today, a new radio has leaked for the thunderbolt that is suppose to fix the random reboot issue many people have been having. However, the radio only works on gingerbread sense builds, like das bamf 2.0. A full froyo rom with the included radio is suppose to be released from htc shortly so the random reboot issue should be a thing of the past. If your running a custom gingerbread sense rom you might want to check out the link below for more details.

Leaked Gingerbread Radio May Brick

There has been much excitement surrounding the release of the new gingerbread roms, but the leaked radio that is required with these builds might be bricking some thunderbolts. It is strongly advised to revert back to a froyo rom and radio. More details can be found if you follow the link below.

Das BAMF 2.0

Das BAMF 2.0, which is built from the leaked gingerbread rom, has hit and is sporting many of the cool features from sense 3.0 including the lockscreen, weather, weather wallpaper, and more. This build does require the leaked gingerbread radio to be flashed.

Update: Leaked gingerbread radio has been known to brick phones, proceed with caution.

Battery Life Solution

If your having short battery life issues with your thunderbolt, I would suggest buying some cheap batteries off ebay and carrying a fully charged battery with you throughout the day. If your phone runs low, just swap the battery for the fully charged one. Most packages come with a wall charger just for the batteries, so it makes having extra, fully charged batteries very simple. I bought two 1500mAh batteries and a wall charger off ebay for $10 shipped. Yes, they aren't really 1500mAh batteries, but they do last me a good 6 or 7 extra hours after my OEM battery runs out. When I have a fully charged, extra battery in my pocket, I'm never afraid to use my phone to it's awesome potential.

HTC Gingerbread Test Build Leaked

This morning a test build for the upcoming official gingerbread update was leaked. It originally was not flashable but @jcase took care of that. Currently, the back camera appears to be broken. Below is a video demo from droid-life and a link to the instructions to flash from androidpolice.

Update: Jcase fixed many issues with this build, including the camera.

First OTA Update

The new htc update is rolling out to non-rooted devices now, and guess what, it's exactly the same as the leaked update from weeks ago released by jcase. This release has some issues with random reboots but has improved battery life and gps. I've been enjoying the new build and radio in das bamf v1.6.3.

Free Hotspot Till June 15

The thunderbolt has had free hotspot from launch till tomorrow I believe, but Verizon has extended that till June 15th. Since the free wireless tether app has been removed from the market, here is a link to download the apk for after June 15th.

How to Flash Leaked Radio 1.16.00.0402

In order for this to work, the HTCThunderbolt needs to be S-OFF. Flashing the radio with a corrupt file or interrupting the flash, can brick the device, please proceed with caution.

Note: There have been reports of gps issues with this radio. Although, I have not had any problems myself.

1.) download the new radio Here

2.) You have to check the md5 sum! It should match this exactly. 8e166e93a9a72cb7955440720ba8869a

If you don’t know how to check the md5 sum watch the beginning of my video Here

3.) The file is already named correctly, so you just need to place it on the root of your sd card. Not in any folder or subfolder.

4.) Shutdown your phone. Then hold the volume down button and the power button until your phone boots to the bootloader. It should then find the zip file and ask you if you want to apply the update, select yes (volume up). It will flash, then tell you it was successful and push the power button to reboot.

CM7 Thunderbolt Port

Tony Layher aka Slayher will be taking over the development of cm7 for the thunderbolt Over at the xda developers forum members ran a donation to get slayher a thunderbolt so he can start development. They raised enough money for an off-contract tb on launch day, so the wait should not be too long.

Rooted On Launch Day

Well the thunderbolt has already been rooted! Although, it’s not very user friendly at the moment so hopefully by monday when my tb arrives there will be a better solution. I plan on posting a video on my rooting process. Link is below for the ‘dirty’ method.

Why A Thunderbolt?

I thought it would be appropriate for my first post to explain why I upgraded to the htc thunderbolt. I’ve been rocking a rooted motorola droid 1 since it’s launch, and I have really enjoyed the phone and the android platform. Android’s freedom and customizable ui make it the perfect mobile operating system for me. I really enjoy following the different rom developers and always being on the cutting edge of this platform, that only root access can provide.

The thunderbolt seemed like the perfect upgrade for me because I wanted a phone I could have a similar experience on with rooting and customization but with a phone with far superior specs. Yes, I could have waited for the bionic or something with better specs coming later this year, but honestly, I didn’t want to wait when there is no guarantee of them having unlock-able boot loaders. So far, there seems to be enough evidence that the thunderbolt with gain root, quickly and easily. We will see in the coming days. Also, I love most of the aspects of the thunderbolt including the next gen snapdragon processor, the 768mb ram, 4.3” slcd screen, 1.3mp ffc, etc, etc.

This blog will track my adventures and experiences with the htc thunderbolt and provide help and resources for other thunderbolt owners. Stay tuned as I will be receiving my thunderbolt Monday from wirefly.
